DAM-L LS: Four Injured in Tehri Dam Protest

Four injured in lathicharge

The Hindu, August 10, 2000

TEHRI, AUG. 9. Four persons were injured when police lathicharged [baton
charged] demonstrators at the Tehri dam site here today. The villagers were
protesting against `rock-blasting' in the area which had damaged their
homes, cattle and property.

Later, the villagers staged a `dharna' in front of the construction site
bringing work at the multi-million dollar Tehri dam project to a grinding
halt.

The villagers allege that the blasts have led to severe damage of the
environment and harmed the flora and fauna in the area. The undercurrents
of the demonstration stem from the villagers' ire over rehabilitation from
the construction site area which has affected their life in more ways than
one.

Nearly one lakh people, which includes the entire population of Tehri town,
have yet to receive land for resettlement. Also, the `drinking water lift
scheme' of the area surrounding Pratapnagar village has been suspended on
the pretext of water shortage in the reservoir.
