::::WHO'S DOING WHAT:::: Chapin Foundation Brings Affordable Drip
Irrigation To Small Farmers and Household Gardens

Since the 1960s when Dick Chapin was one of the pioneer inventors of drip
irrigation, he has been using his knowledge and his systems to help poor
people around the world. As he puts it, drip irrigation is helping people
"to grow vegetables where vegetable cannot be grown."

Chapin began working on fulfilling his mission in Africa in 1974. He began
with a drip system that used 50-gallon drums as the water source. The
large size of the drum made the device too bulky, and Chapin began to look
into alternatives that were smaller and more practical for family gardens.
The result is the Bucket Kit.

The Bucket Kits work with the same efficiency as commercial drip systems.
But, unlike commercial systems the Bucket Kit system is designed to grow
enough vegetables for a family of three on 40 liters of water a day.

To see a picture of the basic Bucket Kit system go to
www.newforestsproject.com/Summer2000news.htm

The whole system is simple. A 20-liter bucket (supplied by the farmer) is
mounted 1 meter above the ground and a filter stopper is put into the
bottom of the bucket. Two connecting tubes are run from this filter to two
50-foot drip irrigation tapes that have drip outlets spaced at 12-inch
intervals.

These tapes are placed on prepared soil beds and plants are placed near the
drip outlets to receive maximum benefit. The bucket is filled twice daily
with water, and gravity makes sure the plants get the moisture they need.
The Bucket kit comes with instructions on how to make the raised beds and
how to make the green manure to provide the nutrition the plants need.

Despite the simplicity, the Bucket Systems are extremely successful, saving
precious water often fetched up to a mile away, and the labor needed to
water each plant individually. Better yet, using the Bucket Systems seems
to please the plants, too. Tests have shown that plants that are watered
using the bucket system have higher yields than those that have been
painstakingly hand-watered.

their larger 1/4 acre systems contact New Forests Project at
