Tremors put question mark on Gujarat's sweet water lake project

by Ashish Amin, India Abroad News Service

Ahmedabad, Sep 19 - The future of a 63-km long dam planed across the Gulf of
Cambay in Gujarat to create the world's largest sweet water lake is in doubt
following intermittent tremors in certain parts of the state over the past
month.

The Kalpasar project envisages the construction of the dam between Ghogha in
Bhavnagar district and Hansot in Bharuch district. Ghogha is about 200 km
south of Ahmedabad on the western shores of the Gulf of Cambay. Hansot is on
the eastern shore of the gulf.

But geologists suspect the epicentre of the tremors to be within Bhavnagar
district. This has raised questions over the vulnerability of the proposed
project.

However, Narmada and Major Irrigation Minister Jay Narayan Vyas has denied
that there is any threat to the project. He told IANS that a feasibility
report was being prepared and the effect of the tremors would be taken into
account.

He accepted the fact that the aftershocks had been felt in Ghogha. He said
the seismographic studies will take into account what could happen if the
Kalpasar project is undertaken.

If executed, the project will create the world's largest sweet water spread
over half a million acres. It will help irrigate 733,000 hectares as well as
generate 6,200 MW of tidal power through the underwater turbines of the dam.
A road and a railway line linking Saurashtra with south Gujarat will run on
top of the dam.

The project is likely to cost around Rs 530 billion. It was envisaged by a
Dutch expert many years ago and has become a pet project of Chief Minister
Keshubhai Patel.
