Remarks
The project entails the construction and operation of a $4bn, 3,600MW
hydro-electric power plant on the
Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State, Nigeria.
Talks were held between the Nigerian president, officials from the power
and steel ministry and
Nigerian Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and an unidentified US firm in
September 2000 to sign
agreements to develop the project.
The move is part of the government's emergency power programme aimed at
increasing the country's
electricity generation capacity. Several agreements have already been
signed with independent power
producers since June 2000 and in September 2000 the government invited
consultants to bid for the role
of adviser for the privatisation of NEPA.
