Kenya Issues New Power Rationing Schedule

Panafrican News Agency
November 30, 2000

Nairobi, Kenya

The Kenyan ministry of energy has announced a new power rationing schedule
for all
industrial consumers who will now receive power for 19 hours, instead of
the previous eight.

The ministry has also announced that the current power rationing will
continue despite the
short rains, which have been experienced countrywide over the past month.

Energy minister Francis Masakhalia told journalists Thursday that the power
rationing
programme will be adjusted for industries to 19 hours per day all week from
2000 GMT to
1500 GMT the following day.

Domestic customers will continue to be rationed under two groups to support
the morning and
afternoon shortfall, as has been the case in November.

Domestic users will, however, now receive uninterrupted supply on weekends
from Saturday
afternoons to Monday mornings.

Masakhalia said that the water levels at the country's hydro-electric power
dams was still low
- at 1028.03 metres as of Tuesday this week - which was still five metres
below the
minimum operating level.

The weather prognosis by the country's weathermen suggests that there will
be no significant
improvement in the water inflows, he added.

Meanwhile the Kenya Electricity Generating Company, or KenGen, says it has
repaired and
installed a 30 MW thermal steam turbine at Kipevu in Mombasa to further
ease the rationing
schedule.

In a circular, KenGen says the rehabilitation of the facility would supply
an additional 30 MW
of power to the national grid.

The country has since June 2000 been facing an acute power and water
shortage, which
was occasioned by a devastating drought, the worst in 50 years.

The drought situation has abated since the onset of the October rains. The
rains, however,
have been unsatisfactory in the country's central, eastern and northeastern
regions.
