Dear Friend,
I am writing to share with you some recent developments and to invite
you to join International Rivers Network in the fight for living rivers
and human rights.

These recent headlines highlight a dark reality which IRN has been
speaking out against for nearly fifteen years - that large dams are
socially and environmentally destructive.
In November, the world's news media focused on large dams at the
launch of the World Commission on Dams final report. For the past
three years, IRN has been actively monitoring the Commission, an
independent body established to review the performance of large
dams and make recommendations for future planning of water and
energy projects.
The World Commission on Dams' findings support what IRN has
been saying for years.
o Large dams have failed to produce as many benefits as claimed
and have caused tremendous environmental and social impacts
worldwide.
o Dams have fragmented and transformed the world's rivers.
o Reservoirs have flooded the most fertile land and vital wildlife
habitat, causing great damage, including the extinction of many
fish and other aquatic species.
o The benefits of large dams go mostly to the already well off while
poorer sectors of society have borne the costs.
o 40-80 million people have been forced from their homes and
lands, have lost their livelihood and are now faced with issues of
displacement.

Yet there is more work to be done. Along with other organizations
around the world, IRN is calling on funders of the dam industry,
including the World Bank and export credit agencies, to halt all
support for dams until problems with existing dams are assessed and
addressed, and the guidelines put forth by the Commission are fully
implemented, including reparations for communities who have lost
their rivers, homes, lands and livelihoods. In order to allow dam-
affected communities access to the report, IRN plans to translate the
WCD report into various languages so it can be accessible to the
people that are most affected by dams. And in workshops around the
world, we'll work with local groups so that they can use the report to
their full advantage.
