THREE GORGES PROBE
February 21, 2001

To build and be damned
September 11, 2000 -- The U.K. Guardian,
referring to a petition protesting the Three Gorges
dam project, notes Probe International's role in
publicizing the controversial document. Fifty-three
Chinese experts submitted the petition to China's
leaders in March 2000, warning of rapid siltation in
the dam's reservoir and recommending that the reservoir
be kept low to give experts time to monitor silt buildup
and reduce resettlement pressure. Probe International
translated and distributed the petition via its Three
Gorges Probe news service on April 26, 2000.

Three Gorges Probe welcomes submissions. However, it is not
a forum for political debate. Rather, Three Gorges Probe is
dedicated to covering the scientific, technical, economic, social,
and environmental ramifications of completing the Three Gorges
Project, as well as the alternatives to the dam.
