-- PROPOSALS FOR EL BATO DAM DUE MARCH 29. The Ministry
of Public Works (MOP) announced that preparations for the
construction of the El Bato dam in central Chile's Region IV
will go ahead as planned, despite recent setbacks. The
deadline for technical assistance bids is March 29 and budget
proposals will be accepted starting April 27.
This is the first time MOP has put an irrigation project
out to bid, and the project has experienced a number of
setbacks and consequent delays. The project's main
difficulties stem from the high level of state subsidies needed
for the initiative. After extensive negotiations between MOP
and the Treasury Department, the state subsidy has been fixed
at 80 percent.
This has not been the only problem the project has faced,
however. Environmentalists and farmers from the Illapel area
in Chile's IV Region have protested the construction of the
dam, maintaining that it threatens the area's ecosystem.
Nonetheless, the nation's courts recently confirmed the
environmental authorities' approval of the US$37 million
project. The finished dam will store over 25 million cubic
meters of water that will irrigate 3,500 hectares of land.
