Hydro deal ends longtime dispute
GRAND RAPIDS FIRST NATION, MB - Manitoba Hydro and the Grand Rapids
First Nation have agreed to a $7 million compensation deal the
community says it's owed for damage due to hydro projects.
For 40 years Manitoba Hydro and the Grand Rapids First Nation have
been at odds over a dam at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River. The
community, which depends primarily on fishing for its livelihood,
complained the dam blocked fish stocks from swimming downstream into
Lake Winnipeg.
Among other things, the settlement money will be used to establish
community capital projects. "It's good for Grand Rapids, good for
Winnipeg, good for the whole province," says Manitoba Hydro president
Bob Brennan.
Grand Rapids chief Douglas Ballentyne also hopes the agreement will
lead to future partnerships with Hydro. "I hope Hydro will think the
same way. I hope they'll come to the table and talk with us."
Brennan doesn't rule out future partnerships ? Hydro wants to settle
outstanding claims as it tries to boost exports to American markets.
After four decades of hard feelings, both the community and the
corporation appear to realize their futures are linked.
