Flow in main rivers increases
The Dawn, By Faraz Hashmi, 03/05/2001
http://www.dawn.com/2001/05/03/top6.htm

ISLAMABAD, May 2: Much to the relief of growers and those concerned with the
distribution of water among the provinces, the flow in the country's main
rivers has risen to a satisfactory level, an Indus River System Authority
official said. The data collected on Wednesday morning showed a combine flow
of 88,870 cusecs in Indus, Kabul, Jehlum and Chenab rivers, he said. With
the increase, Irsa directed the supply to Punjab and Sindh according to
their respective shares. Sindh has been supplied 24,000 cusecs from the
Indus Arm, out of 48,100 cusecs. Punjab, which was receiving 8,350 cusecs
from the same source, would start getting 19,000 cusecs, apart from 39,970
cusecs flowing down in Jehlum and Chenab. Balochistan and the NWFP would get
2,600 and 2,500 cusecs, respectively. The data on water releases to
provinces showed that till May 1, Punjab got 72 per cent less water than its
allotted share and Sindh received 54pc less.

The advisory committee of Irsa would meet on Thursday to take up the issue
of storing water in the Mangla Dam and to review the situation in the late
Kharif and early Rabi season. At its last meeting, Irsa had assigned its
technical committee with the job of appraising the pros and cons of storing
water in Mangla. The committee, in its report, noted that a minimum shortage
of 49pc and a maximum of 61pc water would be experienced in the ongoing
Kharif season. In case the dam is not filled to the required level, then the
shortage would come down to a 45pc minimum and 55pc maximum. And in late
Kharif and early Rabi, for which Punjab wanted to store water, about 20pc
less water would be available if the dam was filled, otherwise the shortage
would increase to 40 per cent.
