Winds of change in Windhoek?s electricity policy

Namibia wants to reduce its energy dependency on South Africa by
developing wind-powered, or aeolian energy. Namibia?s electricity
company, NamPower said that its project to build a windpark at Grosse
Bucht near the coastal town of Luderitz has been given the green
light, provisional on an application for the project being accepted
by the Electricity Control Board. That is due at the end of June, and
the project should commence on July 1. Completion of the US$5.6
million project is expected by the last quarter of 2002. The windpark
is forecast to generate between three and 10 MW of power. At present,
Namibia imports most of its electrical power from neighbouring South
Africa.
A second phase feasibility study for the Grosse Bucht project was
completed at the end of March. An earlier study found the site to be
suitable for ?cleaner? energy provision via wind generation, and
deemed the project to be economically viable. Environmental
assessment studies for the project were carried out by InterConsult
Namibia.
NamPower says the windpark would be the first in sub-Saharan Africa.
Ghana also recently announced a possible Aeolian development project,
and authorized a feasibility study on wind energy along the country?s
eastern coastal zone (AEI 18/04/01).
