Disturbios relacionados con problemas de agua: La lucha por el agua continúa
en el área de Guajarat, que se encuentra azotada por la sequía

El año pasado la policía disparó sobre la gente que estaba protestando por
la inacción del gobierno para negociar la crisis de agua existente en el
poblado de Falla, en el distrito de Jamnagar. Hace quince días la historia
se volvió a repetir en Rajkot. Ocho personas fueron heridas cuando la
policía intervino para impedir que quienes protestaban se inmolaran. Un
grupo de acción llamado "Deshpremi" ha dado un ultimátum a las autoridades
del distrito para que resuelvan el problema del agua, o que se enfrenten a
la acción directa. Alrededor de 5000 manifestantes se volvieron violentos y
arrojaron cascotes sobre la policía quien luego disparo sobre ellos.

El movimiento religioso y social "C L Kotak de Swadhayay", de India
oriental, activo en iniciativas conservacionistas relacionadas con el agua,
dice que los disturbios y protestas ya son de uso común. En Rajkot, los
contratistas del agua están haciendo una matanza por el hecho de vender el
agua a precios excesivos. "Ellos venden 12.000 litros de agua por Rs. 450
(aprox. $10) y adquieren cerca de Rs. 1.000.000 cada mes", dice Kotak.
