WINNIPEG -- More than 80 per cent of the residents of a northern
Manitoba First Nation favour talks with Manitoba Hydro on how to
share in the benefits of future power developments.
Although Hydro's plans are still uncertain, the chief and councillors
of the Nisichawasihk (Nee-See-CHA'-Way-Sick) First Nation at Nelson
House say it shows their people are looking to the future, not the
past.
When off-reserve votes are counted, Chief Jerry Primrose says it's
still two-to-one in favour of moving forward.
Nelson House is even looking at the possibility of buying a stake in
the next hydroelectric project to be built in the North.
And it has also convinced Manitoba Hydro to ensure that future
flooding will be kept to a minimum.
It's one of four First Nations in northern Manitoba which have signed
deals to settle claims for past flood damage from hydro-electric
projects.
Only one affected First Nation at Cross Lake has balked at a deal and
is trying to scuttle any future Hydro developments in the North.
