ISLAMABAD : The Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf has approved in

and the Mirani Dam to augment water resources in the country. He has
directed the Ministry of Finance to raise necessary funds to enable Wapda to

develop small hydropower projects on small falls and barrages at different
sites to meet the water requirements in the country. Meanwhile, Wapda has
identified 591 such sites, which could generate 1,000-1,500 MWs of
electricity besides, providing water for irrigation.

Wapda would soon initiate feasibility studies of projects like Thal
Reservoir, Sehwan Dam, Hingol Dam, three flood-fed canals in the Punjab, the
Jinnah Hydropower Project, Malakand Hydropower Project, Katchi Canal, Mithan
Kot Barrage and other such projects in consultation with the provincial
governments to cater the water requirements for the future. Wapda will also
set up four new hydel projects with a cost of $ 1.5 billion having capacity
of 1,000 MWs in NWFP. According to the sources, the Ministry of Water and

sites for the construction of small dams all over the country aimed at
meeting the water requirements. The Water Wing of the Ministry has been

water requirements keeping in view the expected shortage of water reservoirs
in the time to come.

country to meet the country's agriculture requirements. A national water
strategy has also been prepared keeping in view the future needs of the
country and in this context the ministry has started its efforts to identify
sites for construction of small dams all aver the country. The ministry has
