BAD WEATHER DELAYS WORK ON RALCO HYDROELECTRIC PLANT.

Heavy rains in southern Chile have caused the Bio Bio river in
Region VIII to flood undermining the 40-meter-high containment
wall built to divert its course. The wall allows construction
work on the Ralco hydroelectric plant.
Although Endesa General Manager Hector Lopez said work on
the project will not cease, he admitted that the problem could
delay the plant's completion date by up to nine months. The
plant had been scheduled to be operational by July 2003.
Lopez said part of the rock and sand containment wall had
collapsed, but that the large volume of water released flowed
safely into the Pangue reservoir.
Last Sunday, the reservoir partially opened its gates and
lowered its water levels by five meters in anticipation of
heavy rainfall in the area. This measure prevented the large
volumes of water that flowed into the reservoir from damaging
the dam itself.
The Ralco hydroelectric plant is currently 38 percent
complete. The overall cost of the project is estimated at
US$540 million.
