1) First meeting of the Advisory Committees for the Multi-Stakeholder
Dialogue (MSD):
UNED Forum organised a teleconference on 30 May with
participants from Major Groups in order to prepare the MSD sessions.
UNED will also set up a list server group for further discussions via
e-mail. The Stakeholder Groups invited to join the Advisory Group
include:
- Farmers (International Federation of Agricultural Producers),

- Women (Water & Gender Alliance, UN CSD Women’s Caucus)
- Indigenous Peoples (UN CSD Indigenous Peoples Caucus)
- Trade Unions (International Confederation of Free Trade Unions/ PSI)

3) Thematic preparation for the International Conference on Freshwater
is moving forward :
The Conference Issue Paper “Water: A Key to Sustainable
Development” is in preparation. This overarching paper will
concentrate on questions of poverty alleviation and the promotion of
sustainable development. A first draft will be available in July.

4) Side event in New York - Introducing the Conference at CSD10 :
At the tenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-10)
in New York, Germany announced the International Conference on Freshwater
on 2 May 2001 in a Side Event. Hanns Schumacher, Deputy Permanent
Representative from the German Permanent Mission to the UN chaired
the Side Event during which Dagmara Berbalk from the Federal Ministry
for the Environment and Dr. Michael Hofmann, Director General from the
Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development introduced
the main topics of the Bonn Conference to over eighty participants in
a well-appreciated presentation. The UN Under-Secretary-General for
Economic and Social Affairs, Nitin Desai, characterised the Bonn
Conference as an important contribution to the preparation of
the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
