Kenya: President Moi Returns From Cyprus
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Jun 9, 2001

President Daniel arap Moi today hit out at some opposition elements who are
bent on destroying the government and its institutions.
President Moi said it was unfortunate that some people in the opposition
mistakenly thought that their [word indistinct] included sabotaging
government programmes with the aim of failing it.
President Moi was speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on
arrival from a four-day visit to Cyprus.
He singled out the multimillion Sondu Miriu hydroelectric power project as
one threatened with sabotage, saying it was unfortunate that some local
politicians were bent on wrecking it. President Moi pointed out that the
project stood to benefit not only the country but would open a lot of
opportunities for local people...
President Moi at the same time warned those who had perfected the art of
sabotage that it was a self-defeating move. He said even if their intention
was to make the present government unpopular so as to eventually take over
the reins of power, they will not be safe as the culture of sabotage will
have taken root.
President Moi said the government has suffered economically for more than
10 years because of donor conditionalities. Noting that the donors had
unfairly been shifting goal posts for resumption of aid to the country
during the period, the president told Kenyans to resolutely support the
government in her efforts to improve the economy. He lashed out at Kenyans
who sang the tunes of foreigners without evaluating the impact of their
conduct to the country.
President Moi once again spoke against ethnicity, saying that it was a vice
the country should not condone at all costs. He told those aspiring to the
country's presidency that they must avoid tribal [word indistinct] and have
a national appeal. President Moi further advised leaders to take the
interest of the people before their own, adding all leaders had the
responsibility of participating in poverty reduction and uplifting the
living standards of the people...
President Moi once again told Kenyan journalists to be patriotic to their
motherland and avoid writing articles that could wreck havoc in the
country. He stressed that if the country tipped off all Kenyans will
suffer, including the journalists.
On the constitution, President Moi renewed his statement that appointment
to the constitution of Kenya Review Commission was a great honour and those
appointed to it must not take the appointments a short cut to riches...
