Parody ad attacks northern Hydro projects

Winnipeg Free Press

Thu, Jun 21, 2001

A GROUP calling itself Customers for Responsible Energy launched a parody ad
campaign yesterday aimed at Manitoba Hydro.

A banner featuring an aboriginal baby and the slogan "Hydro dams harm
Pimicikamak Crees" was hung over the enormous infant mural on the Manitoba
Hydro building at the corner of St. James Street and Portage Avenue.

"The banner is to raise awareness of the cost of energy production in Manitoba
and some of the unaccounted-for costs in Northern Manitoba," said Jonah Clark,
spokesman for the Winnipeg-based group that supports the Cross Lake band. It
unveiled a Web site -- www.hydrohurts.mb.ca -- outlining the first nation's
concerns about the impact of northern generating stations and demands that the
1977 Northern Flood Agreement be honoured.

Claims that hydro power is "clean, green and renewable are entirely false,"
said Clark, a student at the University of Winnipeg.

"Mega-hydro projects have huge environmental and social impacts. We want to let
Manitobans know."

He said every person in the province benefits from cheap electricity rates
thanks to the sacrifice of the Pimicikamak Cree, who lost traditional lands and
their way of life in the Northern Flood Agreement.

Protesters travelled to Minneapolis last month to protest the purchase of power
from Manitoba.
