Islamabad, other cities receives above average rainfall in June
The Nation, 28/06/2001
http://www.nation.com.pk/daily/today/national/isb1.htm

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Federal Capital has received 118 mm of rainfall during
the month of June against a normal downpour of 60 mm in the corresponding
month last year, Director General, Meteorological Department, Dr Qamar uz
Zaman said on Wednesday. Speaking in a PTV programme, he hoped that this
trend will also continue in forthcoming monsoon season. He said Lahore
receives an average 33 mm rains in this month but, 118 mm rainfall has been
recorded in the city so far. Similarly, in Sialkot region, normal average
rains remained around 70mm which has now touched 290mm in the month of June,
he added.

Dr Qamar said the country is likely to witness above normal rains in the on
going monsoon season, as the La-Nina phenomenon along with other climatic
parameters are returning to normal in the region. Upto now in pre-monsoon
rains, specially in upper parts of the country, Northern Areas and areas of
Punjab, excessive amount of rains have been recorded to normal quantity. He
said till the end of May, drought like situation was recorded in most of the
areas of the country but the arrival of pre-monsoon rains in June, the
situation has been changed all over the country except Western and Southern
parts of Baluchistan. He pointed out that monsoon rains do not occur in many
areas of Balochistan unless a strong monsoon season comes. Dr Qamar said the
Punjab province and Northern Areas of the country have received considerable
rains in the month of June this year. It all happened because the climatic
cycle which struck this region during last few years, is now going to be
normal," he added.

Dr Qamar said one main factor was La-Nina phenomenon which was one of the
main reasons for the history's worst drought in Pakistan, adding, it has now
ended and the other climatic parameters are also returning back to normal.
Dr Qamar said in current situation, moisture and required water quantity
will be available for the sowing of rice. To a question about floods, he
said, its too early at this stage to forecast about it as any prediction
will not be reliable. He said meteorological drought will be concluded in
the next two months, but effects of the current drought will be finished
slowly and will take nearly two to three years.
