Water wastage stats shock

Johan Eybers

Johannesburg - More than half of the water supplied by Rand Water to
consumers here is currently wasted, and could be enough to provide double
the number of consumers with free basic water.

These shocking statistics have been released by Rand Water. The statistics
show that on a daily basis, 810 000 kilolitres of the three million
kilolitres of clean water supplied to the province ends up in sewerage
systems. Some 25% of the total water supply falls under "inefficient usage".

Rand Water's Hannes Buckle says 10.8 million kilolitres of water is needed
to supply free basic water to Gauteng residents. Currently each Gauteng
family receives six kilolitres of free water per month.

An estimated 18.3 million kilolitres of extra water will be available should
75% of the current wastage be saved.

Buckle says flooding of sewerage systems could be prevented if the current
wastage is contained, as the clean water puts unnecessary pressure, in terms
of cost and volume, on sewerage treatment works. Soweto, alone, loses more
than 70 percent of its water.

He has also pointed out that many Gauteng consumers waste water because they
pay a set fee for their water. At more than 100 000 water supply points
here, there are no meters - making it impossible to monitor and charge for
usage above the first free six kilolitres of water.

New water regulations stipulate that meters have to be installed at these
supply points within the next two years. It will cost an estimated R100
million.

Buckle added that another problem was that water is still relatively
inexpensive, and that those who waste are not really penalised.

He said that in Windhoek, which has an acute water shortage, users had to
pay double the normal tariff if they used a certain amount of water. The
result was that people in the city were more careful, as they were also
penalised for any wastage.
