Dams' level surges after rains

By Faraz Hashmi

ISLAMABAD, July 24: Water level in all the main rivers has risen sharply
owing to the unprecedented monsoon rains in the entire northern region of
the country, an official told Dawn.

The total flow in all the rivers of the country, which was around 322,000
cusecs till Sunday evening has almost doubled in just 24 hours and on Monday
afternoon it reached the level of 544,000 cusecs.

In Tarbela, the water level surged by six feet in a day. At 6 p.m. on Sunday
it was recorded at 1481.85 feet and exactly after 24 hour on Monday, it rose
to 1487.06 feet. However, the dam still has the cushion of 63 feet since the
maximum height of dam is 1,550 feet.

The flow in river Indus upstream Tarbela on Sunday was 214,000 cusecs which
has now reached 272,000 cusecs. The outflow is being maintained at 100,100
cusecs. The water level in Mangla rose by one feet in the 24 hours from 6
p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. On Sunday evening, it was 1159.60 feet and on
Monday it reached 1160.80 feet.

The flow in river Jehlum on Sunday evening was 29,600 cusecs and on Monday
it surged to 64,000 cusecs. At Mangla, too, the outflow is being maintained
at 75,000 cusecs. An official of flood commission said that river Kabul at
Warsak, Chenab at Qadirabad and Ravi at Balooki were in low flood.

The flow in Indus at Chashma was 176,782 cusecs. At Guddu, the inflow was
149,481 cusecs and outflow 112,770 cusecs. At Sukkur, the inflow was 125,392
cusecs and outflow 125,993 cusecs, and at Kotri the inflow was 34,267 cusecs
and outflow 5,325 cusecs. He said that the water level in these rivers has
risen because of rains in their catchment areas. The data gathered at the
control room of flood commission showed that Plundari Azad Kashmir received
125 mm of rains, Kotri Azad Kashmir 77 mm, Augi Azad Kashmir 111 mm, Saido
Sharif 71 mm, Phala 40 mm, Murree 30 mm and Para Chenar 19 mm.

The experts at the federal flood commission said intense rains in some parts
of the northern areas had caused problem of localised flood but so far there
was no danger of national floods. They said it should rain more because last
year both the dams, Mangla and Tarbela, could not be filled to their maximum
capacity and the country had experienced serious shortage of water in
winter.

Intikhab Amir from Peshawar adds: Torrential rains and flash-floods in the
upper Mansehra district of NWFP, which swept away several villages in Daddar
Qadeem leaving over 100 persons dead on Monday, caused Siron River's inflows
to surge to 42,700 cusecs - much higher than its normal inflow of 1,000
cusics daily, said the Peshawar-based sources

Besides, decrease in the water discharge demand by the Indus River System
Authority (Irsa) for Tuesday partly caused rise in the reservoir's level,
said the sources. Irsa, said the sources, reduced its demand for water
discharge by some 30,000 cusecs for Tuesday due to torrential rains and high
flood in downstream areas.

Till Monday, keeping in line with Irsa's demand, 140,000 cusecs of water had
been discharged to feed irrigation system in Punjab and Sindh for the Rabi
and the ongoing Kharif cropping season. In view of the Monday's torrential
rains in Rawalpindi and other parts down-the-stream Tarbela reservoir, Irsa
has placed a demand for 110,000 cusecs for the 24-hour period from 7:00 a.m.
on Tuesday to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

In a related development, the Tarbela dam authorities have convened a
meeting with the civil administration of areas adjacent to the Tarbela dam
on Thursday [July 26] to discuss precautionary measures to be taken during
the current flood season. According to the sources, the authorities of the
civil administration of Harripur district [housing the dam and reservoir],
Swabi district, Nowshera district, Attock district and Ghazi subdivision -
all situated adjacent to Tarbela dam - have been asked to attend the
Thursday's meeting. The Met office, said the Tarbela-based authorities, had
anticipated the flood season to continue for the next one month.
