International water conferences in the pipeline

Water policy makers are scrambling to push through decisions on financing
and governance of water systems throughout the world. In this area, UN and
World Bank agencies continue to spread the gospel of privatisation like
over-zealous missionaries.

To counter this, PSI will present research to support its position in
several meetings.

In July, the Council of Canadians will host an alternative water meeting,
Water for People and Nature, where the views of water workers, users,
environmentalists and other NGOs will be prominent. PSI works with the
Canadian affiliate CUPE to present a session on privatisation and public
water systems.(the meeting was held from 5th to 7th of July 2001)

In August, PSI has been invited as presenter to the annual Stockholm Water
Symposium which will deal with issues of governance in a specific workshop.
In December, the German government will host the Bonn Freshwater
conference, involving many UN agencies (some 20 of these are involved in
decisions on water), the World Bank and a number of national governments.
Thanks to the efforts of Ver.di, PSI is on the planning committee of this
conference, where finance and governance of water systems will be themes.

Next year, the UN will host the Rio+10 Earth Summit in South Africa. The
topic is water. PSI will participate in the preparatory meetings (run by
the UN Committee on Sustainable Development) and in the Summit.

In 2003, Japan will host the 3rd World Water Forum. Now, as a result of
what happened at the 2nd Water Forum, labour is on the planning committee,
represented by Jichiro.
