Mangla dam issue: Water & Power Development Authority asks Azad Kashmir to
route queries through ministry
T A MALIK
.......ISLAMABAD : The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has
asked the Azad Kashmir Government not to directly contact it on the issue of
Mangla dam, sources told Business Recorder here on Monday. Wapda has also
stressed that issues regarding Mangla dam should come through Minister for
Kashmir Affairs, Abbas Sarfaraz Khan, who has been entrusted the task by the
President Pervez Musharraf to talk all stakeholders.
.......The 'authority' has further asked that it has no objection to give
briefing to the AJK government and is ready to reply all questions in this
respect but the correspondent should be routed through the Ministry of
Kashmir Affairs, sources added.
.......The people and government of AJK have expressed concern over raising
of Mangla dam, but Wapda is determined to initiate the project in order to
enhance the capacity of water storage.
.......The Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Abbas Sarfaraz Khan, has assured
the AJK government that the decision would be taken according to the wishes
of the people of AJK and they would be taken into confidence before taking
any step. He had said that the decision would be taken after the report of
technical committee.
.......Wapda has estimated the cost at Rs 52 billion for raising Mangla dam
height and the federal government has allocated Rs one billion in the
current fiscal for feasibility of the project, sources added.
.......Sources in the Chief Executive Secretariat said that Wapda management
and Ministry of Kashmir Affairs have been asked by the Chief Executive not
to give statements on raising of Mangla dam height till report of the
technical committee and decision of the government.
