4 mega projects worth Rs 60 billion to be launched next month
.......ISLAMABAD : Four gigantic projects worth Rs 60 billion, to be
launched next month (August), primarily in infrastructure and water
management sectors will serve as major catalyst to economic revival
programme. These projects, including Gomal Zam dam, Right Bank Outfall Drain
(RBOD), Greater Thal Canal and Gwadar-Pasni Highway have already been
approved by the country's economic forum, National Economic Council, sources
said here on Friday.
.......Total cost of these mega projects is estimated at Rs 60 billion,
while over Rs three billion have already been set aside for current fiscal.
.......Greater Thal Canal project in Punjab will cost Rs 25 billion, RBOD
project in Sindh, Rs 14 billion, Gomal Zam dam in NWFP, over Rs 12 billion
and Mirani dam in Balochistan and Gwadar-Pasni Highway project will cost Rs
eight billion.
.......Thal Canal project is scheduled to be completed in Thal desert of
Punjab, which is around 23 miles long with 10,500 cusecs off-take from
Chashma-Jhelum link canal.
.......The Gomal Zam dam in NWFP, located at Khajuri Kach in South
Waziristan on Gomal river, 75 miles from D.I. Khan, would help irrigate over
132,000 acres and produce 17.4 MW of electricity. The project would have a
major contribution towards flood control.
.......Mirani dam project is located on Dasht River, 48 km west of Turbat
town in Makran division and will help provide water for irrigation. -APP
