Adequate water supply can bring agri revolution in Balochistan
.......QUETTA : Adequate water supply can help Balochistan grow a variety of
new crops to bring an agricultural revolution in the national and provincial
economy. "Scientific handling of both perennial and non-perennial water
sources is warranted to ensure a sustainable agricultural production in the
province," said Chaudhry. M. Zulfiqar, former Director-General, Agriculture,
Quetta.
.......He was briefing the associates of Leadership for Environment and
Development (LEAD) here on "Agricultural use of Water in Balochistan."
.......Since soils are comparatively new in Balochistan, they have the
ability to give high yields, he said and added, climate is also ideally
suited to grow highly remunerative crops.
.......Balochistan has the capacity to grow new crops like, Oil Palm,
Jujuba, Seabukthorn, Saffron, Indigo, Cut flowers to bring a revolution in
the provincial economy, Zulfiqar said,
.......Although scarcity of water is the main issue in Balochistan, yet it
was never given the desired level of importance, he added.
.......Noting that the province has vast lands and can grow a variety of
crops by increasing water supply, he suggested establishment of a strong
institute on water use research with the Agriculture Department to guide
farmers on water management and its optimal use.
.......Similarly a regular water management programme has to be run on
permanent footing in the province both in public and private sectors, he
added.
.......Balochistan has a geographical area of 34.179 million hectares (m
ha). Out of which 2.06 m ha (or 5.93 percent) are cultivated and irrigated
area is 0.81 in ha, which comes to only 2.34 percent of the total area and
39.48 percent of the cultivated area, Zulfiqar said.
.......There is 4.876 m ha lying as cultivable waste, which can be brought
under plough by reclaiming and developing lands and promoting water
resources, he opined.
......."This land mass comes to about 14 percent of the total geographical
area which if exploited can bring a visible change in the national as well
as provincial economy and absolve Pakistan from importing wheat, edible
oils, pulses on one hand and produce exportable surplus of vegetables and
fruits," he added. -APP
