BADIN: Failure of LBOD caused no loss to Badin crops: Wapda

By Muhammad Hashim Burghari

BADIN, July 27: Wapda has claimed that failure of the tidal link of the Left
Bank Outfall Drainage (LBOD) caused no loss to the crops, lands and
ecosystem in Badin district, as it was mentioned in various reports
submitted to the government by several fact- finding teams and experts.

A highly placed Wapda official, talking to Dawn on Friday, said that more
than 53 breaches had occurred in the LBOD when the cyclone 2A hit the area.
However, all the breaches were plunged immediately, leaving few connecting
to the tidal link, because the water ultimately receded back after its
departure point in the coastal dehs which normally remain under sea water
from the beginning. He said that no seawater or the LBOD deluge had hit any
new area of the district. He denied all the news reports of having breaches
occurred recently at the LBOD.

The official said that Pakistan is the 7th wetland country in the world,
that was why the largest drain programme in Asia-- the LBOD-- was launched
with the credit and grants of eight donor agencies to alleviate water
logging and salinity.

Small field drains and different drainage wells were used to drain out the
saline ground water into a major spinal drain which covers 200 miles and
drops at the point, known as tidal link, which used to convey the saline
water to the head of Shah Samdo Creek, that provides final passage to the
Arabian Sea.

The tidal link cuts some lakes of the area including Pateji, Cholri, Mehro
and Sanhro, while a weir was constructed connecting Cholri lake to the tidal
to maintain water level 4.5ft an average equivalent to seasonal maximum.

During this tide water flows from tidal link into Cholri lake across the
weir and a low tide water flows back from the lake towards the tidal link as
all four lakes are connected to each other. The design of the tidal link was
prepared by a British firm, Mott McDonald, and Partners Limited. Major
portion of the project's Cholri weir collapsed after three to four years of
operation at some places, causing hue and cries for the local people of
Badin as it spread havoc.

On Friday, a team of Wapda, consisting Project Director, Syed Raghab Abbas
Shah, Executive Engineer (civil), Habibullah Khan Bungash, Executive
Engineer (mechanical), Nadeem Ahmed Siddiqui, with journalists and a PTV
team visited the LBOD zero point to see the spot atmosphere.

The project director told the journalists that the team had come to collect
the facts whether any new land spaces had come under seawater or any problem
of pollution had been created due to the breaches. It was witnessed,
however, that the northern bank of the tidal link at zero point, was still
vulnerable due to the continuous erosion.

KILLED: A villager, Hussain Bux Laghari, of Mehar Laghari village, some 35
kilometres from here, killed her sister, Ms Bhoory, on Thursday, on the
pretext of disobedience to her husband. Talhar police, after registering a
case, were investigating. The accused has not been arrested.
