Floods have destroyed a sh400m newly constructed dam at Lodoon Bokora
county in Moroto district. It was built by Zimwe Construction Company.
The State minister in charge of Karamoja affairs, Peter Lokeris, described
the work done by Zimwe as shoddy and called for an immediate investigation.
"If just a simple downpour could wash away the dam, what guarantee is there
that the facilities will serve the people for long?" Lokeris asked.
Lokeris, also MP for Chekwi county, said the dam, the biggest in the
district with a capacity of 140,000 cubic meters, was full of silt and
could not hold any water.
"I think the Government should now think of other ways of providing
watering grounds for the Karimojong and their cattle. Wastage of such big
amounts of tax payers money cannot continue like this," Lokeris said.
According to a report from the Vice-President's office on "status of
construction of dams and valley tanks in Karamoja," Lodoon dam was in
progress and had reached 90% completion.
A visit by a team of five ministers and several government technocrats said
they would soon present a report on their findings to Parliament.
