Chief Minister of MP says NO Construction beyond 93 mts till Proper
Rehabilitation
R&R Sub Group Shuns from Giving Permission for Further Construction

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri.Digvijay Singh has admitted again
that there is no land for rehabilitation in Madhya Pradesh (MP) for the
oustees
of Sardar Sarovar Dam. He also said that there is no question of allowing
any
construction beyond 93 mts, when the rehabilitation of thousands is yet to
be completed. He made this clear in a meeting with the delegation of Narmada
Bachao Andolan (NBA), today (30.8.2001). He said whatever rehabilitation
package MP will develop would only be in consultation with NBA. The Chief
Minister
has agreed for a detailed meeting on the 2nd of September with NBA for a
more elaborate discussion on the issues.

Kamla Yadav (Nimad, MP), Raijikaka (Gujarat), Bava Maharia (tribal area,
MP), Noorji Padvi (Maharashtra), Clifton D'Rozario and Medha Patkar were
in the delegation.

NBA has made it clear that if the meeting on the 2nd is not satisfactory,
NBA will paralyse the work of all Narmada Valley Development Authority
(NVDA)
offices indefinitely.

R&R Sub Group Shuns from Decision for Further Construction

Taking a serious note of the ground reality exposed by NBA, the
Rehabilitation and Resettlement Sub Group of Narmada Control Authority
refused to give
any clearance for further construction, its Chairperson, Smt.Asha Das told a
delegation of NBA late in the evening yesterday. She emphatically reiterated
that R&R Sub Group has never cleared construction upto 90 mts. She placed
the
blame of permitting construction (upto 90 mts) squarely on the Supreme
Court.
Misinterpreting the proceedings of the Sub Group, the Court in its majority
judgment has stated that the Sub Group has cleared the construction.

Dy.CM Subhash Yadav shows his true colours

In a meeting with over 1200 representatives of the valley late yesterday
evening, Dy.Chief Minister Shri Subhash Yadav, in a pathetic display of
political expediency and arrogance has said that what the state can do is to
give
more cash as compensation. While the law prescribes for land-for-land
compensation, this remains as an example of the law maker turning the law
breaker. With
showers of slogans, people rejected it outrightly. When asked specifically
what the state will do when people reject cash as compensation, he had no
answers.

The Jeevan Yatra which reached his house, on their way back has condemned
his irresponsible pronouncements, that by taking out the Yatra what NBA has
committed is child abuse and violation of their rights. He was asked, by
closing
down the schools in the Maan dam affected area just because a dam in being
built there; by not running any schools the tribal areas of Sardar
Sarovar affected area; by submerging the schools in which they are studying
now, is the state serving in the interests of the children and their
future.

The dharna and protest action by over 1200 representatives of Sardar Sarovar
Dam has confronted the officials of NVDA Bhopal, on their way back to the
Satyagraha, which is in progress in the banks of Narmada. The NVDA neither
had
any satisfactory answers to the issues raised by the people.
