Chief Minister Expresses Grief Over Lathi Charge:
Meets NBA Delegation at Kasaravad - Promises Action: Dharna Continues

Today (4.9.'01) Chief Minister Shri.Digvijay Singh has met a delegation of
Narmada Bachao Andolan, including Medha Patkar, Rakesh Diwan and others,
who were injured in the lathi charge (cane beating), at Kasaravad (Baba
Amte's house), in the presence of Baba and Sadhanatai Amte and assured
that he will look into the demand of an independent enquiry into the
incident, by a retired Judge. During his 45 mts of stay at Kasaravad, Baba
Amte has condemned the police excess on the peaceful demonstrators, not
sparing even the children and women. After hearing the delegation the
Chief Minister expressed shock and grief over the incident.

Medha Patkar and others briefed him in detail about the unprovoked
action of the police, at the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA)
office on peaceful demonstrators who went there to register their
opposition to the unlawful distribution of cash, in lieu of land, which the
government is required to give to the oustees of Sardar Sarovar Project
(SSP).

In spite of police trying to create terror, the dharna, with over 800
people from different villages of Nimad, went on today also with renewed
strength and commitment. The people are watching the actions of the
Commissioner, Indore as well as the Chief Minister, failing which, they
vowed to intensify the agitation. People will be on dharna till the
promises are made a reality.

Many organisations and eminent people, from different parts of the country
have condemned the undemocratic action of the police. They include, senior
social activist Swami Agnivesh, noted writer Arundhati Roy, socialist
thinker Surendra Mohan, environmentalist Ashish Kothari, Aid India and
others.

In an expression of paramount solidarity with the people of Narmada
Valley, noted film maker Anand Patwardhan has resigned from the Board of
Trustees of Bharat Bhawan, a Government of Madhya Pradesh run centre for
Art and Culture. In his resignation letter he wrote, "..I would have
persisted in the hope that in future, remedial action may still bring this
institution to the path of democratic culture, but my hopes have been
dashed by the Madhya Pradesh Government.

One may remember that over 800 people were targeted by the police, under
the orders of SDM Nilkant Tikkam, injuring over 21 people, out of which 3
were hospitatlised. The injured are recovering and they are back with the
people who are on dharna.
