ripped through Jigawa state.
Some 102 people are missing, feared dead, in Jigawa State, northeast
Nigeria, after water released late on Thursday by an overflowing dam swept
through towns and villages, local community leader Mr Sagir Mohammed told
reporters here.
Local leaders had conducted a search and found 102 men, women and children

Red Cross provides relief to Nigerian flood victims

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Nigerian Red Cross officials said Monday the
organisation was providing relief materials to victims of the massive
flooding in the northern Kano and Jigawa States. Several people died and
thousands were displaced in both States by the flooding, which started last
week when the overflowing Tiga and Challawa dams swelled the Wudil River.
Farmlands and houses in several villages were swept away. The officials
could not confirm local media reports that more than 100 people had been
killed in the disaster. However, they said 22,000 people were displaced in
Kano and 40,000 in Jigawa. Hundreds of villagers are also reported missing.
"It is a major disaster because it affected the socialand economic lives of
the people in the area," the Red Crossofficials said. "They (victims) lost
livestock and farmlands... Theycan't harvest anything from their farms,"
the officials said. Items being supplied to the victims, many of whom are
camped in temporary shelters, include blankets, mats, millet and vegetable oil.
