CHINA TO COMPENSATE BURMA, LAOS FOR DAM PROJECT

BEIJING, Oct 3, (EFE) -- China's construction of a dam on the Mekong river
has rattled several southeast Asian countries, concerned about the impact
the project might have on their economies, media in China's capital reported
Wednesday.

Officials in neighboring countries say the dam would seriously endanger fish
populations and the fertility of lands irrigated by the Mekong, the main
source of food for more than 60 million people. "China acts as if it is not
concerned with what happens south of the border. The Mekong river does not
belong to China," said Witoon Permpongsachareon, the director of a Thai
environmental group.

The Dachaosan dam, which is expected to be completed in December, is only
the second of eight hydroelectric power stations China plans to build in
Yunnan province over the next two decades.

In an attempt to fend off criticism, Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji will
announce next month a $5 million relief package for Laos and Myanmar, two of
the poorest countries in the region and those which would be most affected
by the new dam.
