Half of Generated Power Wasted, Says Nepa
Africa News Service ( October 17, 2001 )

Oct 17, 2001 (This Day/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Less than
three months left of the year NEPA was expected to end power outages in the
country, the authority said more than half of the electricity generated in
the country was wasted.
Its spokesman, Malam Muhammad Mousa-Booth, told the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Abuja yesterday that the trend would militate against effective
power distribution and frustrate NEPA's efforts at ending power outages
this year if not checked.
"Government has been giving NEPA a lot of support in its bid to increase
the quantum of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, but
the impact may not be felt unless everybody makes a conscious and sustained
effort at electricity conservation," he said.
The NEPA spokesman explained that energy wastage did not only over-burden
generation facilities, but affected local distribution network, resulting
in voltage fluctuations, repeated fuse blow-outs and protective relays.
Mousa-Booth appealed to major customers, especially corporate bodies, to
adopt measures aimed at conserving energy in factories, offices and
residences.
He urged power consumers to replace all incandescent electric lamps with
energy-efficient variants and to embrace the culture of always switching
off electrical appliances when not in use.
The NEPA spokesman pointed out that the conservation of energy meant less
amount paid as electricity bills by consumers.
On domestic consumption, Mousa-Booth advised Nigerians against using
over-sized water heaters just as he described the heater as the "biggest
consumer of electricity".
