-- NORANDA IS FINISHING EXPLORATION WORKS IN EL PACHON.
The Canadian mining company Noranda is finishing exploration
works in its El Pachon copper deposit - located in the Andean
border between Argentina and Chile - to determine the reserves
of the mining operation.
According to a 1997 report by the Canadian mining company
Cambior and the Bolivian Minera S.A. (El Pachon's previous
owners), the deposit has reserves of 880 million tons of
mineral with a .62 percent assay value per ton of mineral. The
works carried out by Noranda seek to actualize the reserves'
level.
According to company sources, the US$900 million project
remains on schedule and won't be affected by low copper prices.
Noranda acquired El Pachon in September after paying US$30
million to Cambior and Minera S.A.
Noranda is concentrating investments in Latin America and
mainly in Chile, where it's developing a US$170 million
optimizing project for the Altonorte smelting plant and is set
to begin the Alumysa project, consisting of an aluminium
reducing plant and three hydroelectric facilities in southern
Region XI.
