Dear friends and colleagues:
This is an announcement of 2 excellent panels focusing on:

-PANEL 1: ESTABLISHING THE NEEDS AND THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS FOR A "HUMAN
RIGHT TO WATER" &
-PANEL 2: APPLYING A HUMAN RIGHT TO WATER: ALTERNATIVE AND INDIGENOUS
APPROACHES TO WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Please find an overview below. Full abstracts and overview are available in
a
downloadable and easy to read format in a word document at:
http://www.philippinefamily.net/CEEPresearch.html These panels represent
a
unique opportunity to introduce the geographic community to the "right to
water"
movement and its guiding principles, as well as applications! The AAG annual
meetings (www.aag.org) include members of academia, public and private
sectors.
Attendance during the week is typically over 4,000, an entire hotel or
conference center is used to run many concurrent sessions of great diversity
each day. Scope ranges from the physical, human, theoretical, concrete, and
everything in-between. Water and natural resource management is always well
represented. There will be work presented by an international body of
researchers, last year Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations
was
the keynote. It is open to the public. If you would like to attend, or
have
questions or comments, please contact me directly.
Best wishes,

These two back-to-back sessions jointly explore the movement towards a
establishing a "human right" to water. Both the needs, and the theoretical
underpinnings for, adopting a "human rights" lens in water resource
analysis and
development are underscored by both theoretical constructions and "real
world"
examples. Interdisciplinary approaches by the panelists reveal the
potential of
applying this lens through policy making at multiple scales of governance,
conservation, and indigenous approaches in the name of equity regardless of
class, gender, race, or other socio-political factors.
