Zambia grants 15 licences to solar energy companies

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) - Zambia, which recently finished setting
up energy standards, has issued licences to 16 firms to make solar
equipment and accessories. Eleven companies are based in Lusaka, two are in
the provincial town of Chipata in the eastern Zambia, two more in the
mineral rich Copperbelt province and one in the southern town of Kafue.
Yammier Zimba, public relations officer at the Energy Regulation Board, has
BP Zambia Plc, Behrens Limited and Suntech Appropriate Technology Limited
on the list of major companies that have applied for manufacturing
licences. Recently, the energy board came up with solar energy standard
regulations that will give checks and balances to a growing sector that
still needs guidance. Officials at the board said solar energy technology
offered an attractive alternative for providing electricity services to
meet various needs - including domestic lighting, refrigeration at remote
clinics and irrigation on medium to large farms. The board consequently
constituted a technical team that included experts from the Zambia
Electricity Supply Corporation, the University of Zambia and the department
of energy at the ministry of energy and water development to come up with
the standards. Apart from formulating enforceable solar energy standards,
the technical committee is also mandated to ensure that solar energy
technologies and practices are harnessed so they help the nation can meet
the basic energy needs of rural communities.
