Centre’s Permission to seal
The tunnels of Tehri Dam

Dehradoon (Bhasha (a regional Hindi News Agency of PTI)):

The centre has given green signal to seal two tunnels necessary for the
completion of the controversial 2400 MW Tehri Dam Project. However, the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Organisation) strongman Ashok Singhal and
the well-known environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna have been opposing this
move till the last.

Authoritative sources have said that Tehri Hydro Development Corporation,
responsible for this highest dam under construction in Asia, have already
issued an order to the effect that gates of Tunnels 3 and 4 may be sealed in
a day or two. Sources also said that such an order has the permission of the
Prime Minister.

The officials have taken the decision to seal the tunnels of this 260.5 m
high dam after postponing the commissioning date of the project by one year.
The work on this giant project came to a halt for a month in April this year
following agitation by the well-known environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna
and local people. In this respect, in spite of many attempts by the
Uttaranchal Govt., the problems of the displaced have not yet been solved
and are a hindrance in completing the project.

The 1000 MW first phase was to be commissioned by coming March, but after
obstacles in the construction work, this has now been postponed to March
2003. With a view to achieve the target by the given date of March 2002, the
project officials had decided to seal tunnels T-3 and T-4 by March 31 this
year. But at the last moment, following indefinite fast by the VHP strongman
Ashok Singhal, the official decided to postpone the date. Singhal has argued
that following sealing of the tunnels, the continuous flow of river
Bhagirathi would stop and that would destroy the purity of river Ganges.
