Nile Power Capacity At 2000mw

The potential capacity of the White Nile in Uganda is estimated to be
in excess of 2000 megawatts.

Currently, only 380MW is being generated at the Nalubaale and Kiira
dams. Another 250MW is expected from the proposed Bujagali power
station in about four years.

Energy minister, Syda Bbumba, on Friday said there is considerable
potential for further development of hydroelectric resources both for
domestic requirements and export.

"In addition to the three hydro projects, I have talked about, four
other major sites have been identified, namely Kalagala, Karuma,
Ayago North and Ayago South," she said.

Bbumba was speaking at a seminar to develop a strategic plan for the
electricity regulation. She said Uganda also has potential for small
hydropower development, especially along the tributaries of the Nile
and on the slopes of Rwenzori and Elgon mountains.

The seminar was aimed at creating a common understanding of ERA's
(Electricity Regulatory Authority) goals and objectives, identify
potential supply developments, and discuss regulatory approach to
rural electrification.

"More than twenty mini hydro sites with the capacities ranging
between 0-55MW have been identified. There are also numerous micro
hydro sites, especially in the mountain parts of western and eastern
Uganda," Bbumba said.

She said that with the existing supply system dominated by Nalubaale
and Kiira power stations at Jinja, power supply is still very
inadequate.

"Currently, 5% of Uganda's population is supplied with grid
electricity. Around 20% of the urban population is connected, but
less than 1% of the rural population. Records show that there are
over 148,000 grid electricity users. The average per capita energy
consumption is only 44kmh/year," she said. She said domestic
customers are the biggest users of power.
