rally at Carleton Pride(?) event

                    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
                    THURSDAY 12 FEB. 1998

PROTEST ON ICE-SKATES AT CARLETON UNIVERSITY

Faculty, students and concerned members of the Carleton University
community will hold a "protestcapades" on ice to express their opposition
to the closure of programs and threatened layoff of faculty. The
demonstration will take place at the university's "Carleton Pride" event
at the Hartwell Locks on the Canal by Dunton Tower at 7pm on Friday Feb.
13. The protest is organized by the 650 member Carleton University
Academic Staff Association and is supported by student and other groups on
campus.

The Carleton Pride event is an annual Winterlude demonstration of pride at
Carleton University. Carleton staff threatened with layoffs and students
affected by program closures will have an opportunity to demonstrate
against management decisions that diminished their "Carleton Pride."
"CUASA intends to put the layoffs of faculty on `ice' as a way towards
restoring that pride." says CUASA President Peter Fitzgerald. "We shall
continue to fight for the principle of voluntary separation before layoffs."
