Peace Tree Ceremony - July 4th

Two years ago Guatemalan writer, José Recinos, walked across Canada to
raise awareness about human rights abuses in Guatemala. When he passed
through Ottawa, he planted a Peace Tree to remember the thousands of
Guatemalan men, women and children killed during more than 30 years of
civil war.

Celebrate the second anniversary of José's Peace Tree in Central Park (Bank
and Powell, west side) with First Nations' artist Simon Brascoupé. The
ceremony starts at 5 pm on Saturday, July 4th.

On July 8th, José leaves for a visit to Guatemala, accompanied by Connie
Berry of Ottawa. Connie will work as human rights observer with Project
Accompaniment in Guatemala.

Following the ceremony there will be a get-together to say adieu to Jose
and Connie, at La Isla Bonita Restaurant, 300 Preston St. (south of
Gladstone). To RSVP or for more information contact Carol Scott at 739-1409.
