International Women's Day 1999

Millions of women and men around the world mark International Women's
Day (IWD) each year. The origins of IWD have been traced to labor
strikes- workers protesting overcrowded, dangerous working conditions
and exploitative wages paid to women textile workers. IWD is a day to
recognize women's struggles.

A rally, march, and celebration will be held in Ottawa on Sunday, March
7th. All are welcome to gather at 1:00 p.m. on parliament Hill. The
march will proceed to the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton
building (111 Lisgar) where all are invited to join in celebrating IWD
with food, music, and dance. Festivities at the RMOC will begin at 2:30
p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The theme for Ottawa's IWD is "1999 Reasons Why it's Time for Change".
This theme was chosen to illustrate the urgency of achieving women's
equality. Please join us in the creation of a mural detailing 1999
reasons why it's time for change.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. If you are interested in joining the IWD organizing
committee please call Renee Parent at 231 5144 or Judith Lamarche at 789
