               The OPIRG-Events Mailing List

QUICK INSTRUCTIONS

To post a message to the list (all subscribers) send it
to opirg-events@ox.org.

YOU MUST BE A SUBSCRIBER TO SEND ANNOUNCEMENTS.
This is a ploy to deflect spam. Spammers won't take the time to
subscribe to the list before posting.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

There are three kinds of subscriptions that you can have:

1. one kind is the normal kind in which you get all the posts, and
	you can post.
2. a second kind is the where you get no posts directly, but you can post.
3. a third kind is where you get all the posts, but can not post.

If you read the events list as a newsgroup and you want to post to
the list, you'll want a subscription of type 2. Subscriptions of type
3 are used by the moderators to deal with people who are disruptive to the
list. It is used to suspend someone's instant posting priviledges when there
is some dispute about list etiquette.

If you have multiple email accounts and you sometimes need to post from
an account different from the one that you read posts from, then you can
get a subscription of type 1 for one account and of type 2 for the second
account.

To "subscribe" to or "unsubscribe" from the list, send a message to
opirg-events-request@ox.org

In the body of the message, put the command:

subscribe
  or
unsubscribe

If you want to be added with type 2, then say:

subscribe opirg-events-nomail
  or
unsubscribe opirg-events-nomail

_______________
ABOUT THIS LIST

		Mission Statement

This list-server has been created in order to assist Ottawa's
activist community in both publicizing their events and learning about
upcoming events that are being organized by others.

IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A DISCUSSION GROUP OR FORUM FOR PEOPLE TO
SHARE THEIR POLITICAL OR PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS!

It is intended to be a means to send notices of actual events to a lot of
people quickly. A certain amount of meta-information is permitted, but is
generally discouraged.

We would ask that you limit your postings to those events that would
be specifically of interest to progressive activists in the region.
These events would tend to be those that take an explicitly progressive
political perspective.

It is alright to post notices of social events which you feel would
be of interest to Ottawa's activists (e.g. fundraisers, concerts,
picnics and coffee houses).

Please do not send attachments (e.g. word processor documents, pictures,
PDF files) to this mailing list. Why?

1. Many people cannot process them due to software incompatibility.

2. Wordprocessor documents and spreadsheets, especially from Microsoft,
can be carriers for computer macro viruses.

3. MS-Word and Wordperfect are proprietary software that produce
documents in a proprietary format. When you use such programs and
files to communicate, you force others to acquire the wordprocessor or
similar software that is licensed to read those documents. This is
a social justice issue as you restrict people's ability to participate
in our society based upon income. Microsoft, for instance, does not make
any software for 386 or lower machines, and there are people who read the
list from even older equipment.

4. People are more likely to read and respond to something that they
don't have to take extra steps to read.

In addition, the mailing list software will remove non-ASCII characters
produced by some Microsoft based systems. This is most frequently the dreaded
"Smart Quotes". The mailing list software will also remove any non-text
attachments in the future.

We are trying to operate this as much as possible without a
moderator. Your cooperation is essential in making this project a
success!

Finally, this notice system can only be effective if people use it!
Please post your events here, check your mail regularly, and attend
when you can.

If you have problems using the list, you can contact the coordinator
by writing to Heather Farrow <hfarrow@ox.org> or Michael Richardson
<mcr@ox.org>

You may also see your posting forwarded to a PERC events newsgroup.

If you have immediate technical issues, please contact mcr@ox.org or
phone him at 276-6809. We are working to eventually put all events posted
to the list onto a web based calendar for easier consultation.

You can always ask majordomo@sandelman.ottawa.on.ca to
remove you from any list hosted by Sandelman Software
