--------FAQ's--------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS A CAR SHARING CO-OP?
It's a co-operative that owns cars collectively instead of individually.
Members of the co-op book a car when they need it, pay a fee based on
usage, and return the car when they're done. The co-op takes care of
repairs and cleaning, has full insurance and road-side assistance, and
plans preferential rates with a rental company if a vehicle is unavailable.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Cars are booked by the hour, with a simple phone call, for as long as you
need. Members pick up a car from a location close to them, and bring it
back at the agreed time. Members are billed monthly for the time and
distance traveled.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
A world without individual car ownership! Less pollution, less traffic,
less noise, less resource consumption, and less of an ecological
footprint. Reduced expenses for those who do drive, since you only pay
when you drive. Hassle-free car use.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Our prices will include gas, insurance, repairs, administration,
everything! One possible pricing scheme is:
A $300-400 member loan ("share"), refundable if you leave,
plus a $20 application fee.
Then: $1.40/hr weekdays and $1.80/hr weekends, with no charges between 11
pm and 7 am, and $.21/km (or $.16/km on trips longer than 200km) plus a
$1/trip administration fee.

For example, a two hour trip of 20 km to shop for furniture at several
scattered suburban stores would cost about $8.00 ($1.40/hr plus $.21/km
plus a $1 booking fee).

The CAA estimates it costs around $7,000 per year to keep an average car
on the road. To determine the full cost of owning your car remember to
include: purchase cost, depreciation, financing charges, insurance,
license & registration, regular maintenance, tires & repairs, roadside
assistance, fuel and parking.

HOW DO I BOOK A CAR?
You call the 24h reservation line. Reservation is on a first-come,
first-served basis.

WHERE DO I GET THE CAR KEYS?
They're kept in a lockbox located on the car. Members will have keys to
the lockbox.

WHO FILLS THE TANK?
Members do. They ensure the tank is at least half-full at the end of
their trip, then just submit the receipt. They're reimbursed on their
monthly invoice.

WHO LOOKS AFTER MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS?
The co-op management! Maintenance, repairs, cleaning, insurance,
administration, etc. -- the rates cover all these expenses. Members are
only asked to treat the cars as if they were your own, after all they
are.

HOW DOES INSURANCE WORK?
All cars will carry full comprehensive and liability insurance through
the Co-operator's Insurance Company.

WHY A CO-OP?
Because a co-op is a form of grassroots activism and social change.
Members of the co-op make the decisions and have a direct stake in how
things are run. Co-ops promote community networking and foster
relationships between real people on a local level. Unlike alienated
systems of corporate consumption, co-ops empower individuals with control
over their own actions and patterns of behaviour. In addition, the Ottawa
Car Sharing Co-operative will be a non-profit organization. That means
rates will be as cheap as possible :)
