(E) FEATURE ORGANIZATION -
THE ONTARIO ENVIRONMENT NETWORK
--------------------------------------------------
The Ontario Environment Network is a non-profit, non-governmental
network serving Ontario's environmental non-profit, non-
governmental community. Ontario has over 500 environmental
groups that range from national to neighbourhood-based and focus on
a wide range of issues. The OEN seeks to increase awareness of
these organizations, and to facilitate communication & cooperation
among them. It is a non-advocacy network and does not take
positions on issues. The OEN's programs include:
* Reference & Referral Services - directing inquiries to appropriate
groups & individuals
* Publications - Environmental Resource Book (directory of over
500 environmental groups in Ontario); a thrice-annual newsletter;
Public Consultation, A Citizen's Handbook; Mailing Labels of
environmental groups, Breathable Air in Your Community, Forests
and People.
* Conferences - workshops & twice-yearly conferences (Apr. 1, 2000
in Kitchener - see listings)
* Caucuses - including Sustainable Transportation, Land Use,
Forests, Water, Air Quality, Labour, Youth, Waste, and Energy
* Delegate Selection - suggests delegates for public- & private-sector
consultations & advisory committees
* Database of Ontario environmental groups
OEN Membership is open to non-profit, non-governmental
organizations. Annual membership ($40) includes a copy of the
Environmental Resource Book, a year's subscription to Network
News (and other mailings), reduced rates on conferences, voting
rights, membership in the Canadian Environmental Network and
more. Businesses, professional associations, political parties and
individuals are not eligible for full membership, but as associate
members ($15) they can receive all mailings.
Ontario Environment Network, P.O.Box 1412, Station Main, North
Bay, ON P1B 8K6. Tel: 705-840-2888 Fax: 705-840-5862

***** OEN MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS *****
*** Reference and Referral Services ***
Each year the OEN fields hundreds of environmentally-related
inquiries and re-directs these information requests to environmental
groups. Putting people in touch with environmental groups raises the
profile of organizations and encourages active support through
donations of time and money. Linking concerned individuals to
active organizations also increases understanding of environmental
problems and solutions.
The OEN also receives valuable information from its members, such
as newsletters and reports, to distribute and make available to other
environmental groups and the public.
*** Delegate Selection ***
The OEN is called upon by both the private and public sectors to
identify delegates representing the environmental non-profit sector to
participate in consultations or on advisory committees. Members of
paid OEN member groups are eligible to be included in the OEN's
Delegate Selection Bank - a computerized database. A Delegate
Selection Committee reviews each consultation request and selects
from this pool of candidates. (Be sure to get a Delegate Selection
Form from the OEN office so that you can be included in this
process!)
*** Action Alerts and Mailing Inserts ***
Action Alerts are one or two page summaries of "hot" environmental
issues. Action Alerts typically provide background information on a
topic, an update of where the issue currently stands, suggestions for
actions, and contacts for more information. Action Alerts from
member groups are included in OEN mailings and distributed
through the network on a periodic basis. (See also "homepage",
below).
Mailing inserts can be used to promote events and campaigns,
advertise available resource materials, or to circulate briefings and
petitions. Mailing inserts are sent through periodic OEN mailings or
included with Network News mailings three times a year.
*** Mailing Lists and Labels ***
Mailing lists and labels can be tailored to send information to
environmental groups that are active in specific issues (eg. land use,
forestry, health, biotechnology) or active in a specific geographic
area. Lists and labels can be used to promote events or resources. A
full set of labels (~ 500 groups) and tailored labels/lists are available
to OEN members at a reduced cost. At least seven days notice is
required for generating lists or labels.
*** Electronic Promotion ***
The WEB is an electronic communications network which reaches
the broader social activist community (eg. environment, labour,
social justice). The OEN will upload your Action Alert, event notice
or any other announcement on an electronic conference called
web.announcements.
*** Homepage ***
You can access the OEN homepage at the following address:
http://www.web.net/oen OEN has the names of all its member
groups listed in the homepage. Be sure to contact the office if you
would like your member groups homepage to be hot-linked to ours!
We also upload Action Alerts and briefings on our homepage.
