Jose Rizal is a Filipino National Hero. He was
the first Filipino to arouse a sense of national among his countryfolk. He was a
writer, poet, surgeon, and teacher.
At the age of 21 he sailed to Spain to continue
his studies in medicine. He mastered several European languages and became
friends with young liberals and progressives, most of them Filipinos.
His first taste of free speech and free ideas
was exhilarating for Rizal whose own family had experienced grave injustices
under the oppressive Spanish colonial authorities in the
Philippines.
He wrote 2 novels which kindled
nationalistic fervour in Filipinos. He was eventually arrested and sentenced by
military court to die before a firing squad.
His death in 1896 sparked the revolution of
Filipinos against Spanish colonialism.
