Radioactivists raise awareness about problems with nuclear power, and
advocate environment-friendly alternatives such as solar and wind energy.
This year, we are also raising awareness about the proposed export of
CANDU nuclear reactors to Turkey.
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) has offered to help build a nuclear
plant at Akkuyu Bay, in southern Turkey. The proposed site is near the
Ecemis fault. If there is an earthquake there, radioactive fallout could
devastate countries such as Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine,
Israel, Jordan, Greece, Egypt, and Italy. Over the decades, tens of
thousands of people living around the Mediterranean could develop cancer.
Exporting CANDU reactors also creates risks of nuclear proliferation,
threatening the peace in the Middle East. Countries such as India and the
United States developed nuclear weapons with the help of Canadian nuclear
exports. Could Turkey be the next country to build the bomb with help from
Canada? Please join us, and work for sustainable and peaceful alternatives
to nuclear energy.

Some points to include: Ask the government to cancel exports of
CANDU reactors to Turkey and other countries; point out the dangers of
building nuclear plants in earthquake-prone countries such as Turkey;
express your concerns about the risk of nuclear proliferation
created by exports of nuclear technology.
Write to: Prime Minister Jean Chrétien; Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of
Foreign Affairs; Paul Martin, Minister of Finance; Pierre Pettigrew,
Minister of International Trade; Mac Harb, MP Ottawa Centre;
