Fair Trade Internships Available
Job Posting: 2 CIDA intern positions working on fair trade coffee in Canada
and Central America
TransFair Canada/Fair TradeMark Canada has received approval to hire two
intern positions under CIDA's International Youth Internships 2000-2001
Programme.
The two positions involve similar work in the field - a minimum of three
months working on Co-op Capacity Development in Honduras or Costa Rica -
and separate functions while in Canada: 1. Marketing or 2. Business Systems.
Job Description 1: Co-op Capacity Development Specialist and Marketing
Assistant
As Co-op Capacity Development Specialist, the intern will work with the FLO
Support Network Coordinator and the FLO Latin America Producer Group
Coordinator and Monitor to assess the business system and operational
requirements of FLO Coffee Register co-ops in Central America. The intern
will assist them in preparing proposals for projects to address these needs
and to develop Canadian market plans and contacts.
As Marketing Assistant, the intern will draw upon the collective marketing
experience of Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International (FLO) to
improve our marketing strategy, thus boosting sales of certified fair trade
coffee in Canada.
Tasks:
· Research and assist in the assessment of managerial, financial,
marketing and operational requirements of a select number of small coffee
farmer co-ops in Central America, and in the drafting of Canadian marketing
and project proposals to strengthen the production and exporting capacity
of these co-ops.
· Research and assist in the revision and implementation of TransFair
Canada Marketing Strategy.
· Assist in the day to day operations of the office, including
working with Canadian companies licensed to sell fairly traded coffee in
Canada.
Job Description 2: Co-op Capacity Development Specialist and Business Systems
As Co-op Capacity Development Specialist, the intern will work with the FLO
Support Network Coordinator and the FLO Latin America Producer Group
Coordinator and Monitor to assess the business system and operational
requirements of FLO Coffee Register co-ops in Central America. The intern
will assist them in preparing proposals for projects to address these needs
and to develop Canadian market plans and contacts.
In addition, as Business Systems Specialist the intern will draw upon the
expertise of other Fair Trade National Initiatives and FLO to improve the
certification and internal business systems of TransFair Canada, thus
strengthening our credibility and efficiency as a licensing body.
Tasks:
· Research and assist in the assessment of managerial, financial,
marketing and operational requirements of a select number of small coffee
farmer co-ops in Central America, and in the drafting of Canadian marketing
and project proposals to strengthen the production and exporting capacity
of these co-ops.
· Research and assist in the writing and implementation of Business
Systems Policies and Procedures for TransFair Canada in the areas of
certification, financial reporting and license fee collection.
· Assist in the day to day operations of the office including working
with Canadian companies licensed to sell fairly traded coffee.
Interested Applicants must meet the following criteria as determined by CIDA:
· 30 years of age or younger
· Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
· University or College graduate (or will be when the internship starts)
· Have not previously worked outside Canada in a paid, career-related
position
· Have not previously participated in another internship programme
funded by the government of Canada’s YES (Youth Employment Strategy)
Programme (other youth internship programmes ok)
Terms:
· 9 month contract from approximately mid-June to mid-February (some
flexibility on start date). 6 months based in Ottawa, 3 months in Honduras
or Costa Rica.
· Remuneration based on $20,000/year prorated for 9 months
