* TALISMAN DIVESTMENT CAMPAIGN MEETING, Thurs
July 13, 6pm, Hull. "Talisman Energy Inc is Canada's largest oil
company; the lead agency in an oil project in Sudan which can be
directly linked to brutal 'clearances' of oil fields (by gunships),
continued fighting, military dictatorship & growing weaponry self-
sufficiency. Yet Talisman refuses to withdraw or suspend
operations and the government of Canada has so far refused to
enact sanctions. This despite the finding of Canada's own
assessment mission that, "There are only two ways of neutralising
the negative impact of oil. One is to halt production until real
peace is attained; the other is to set government of Sudan oil
revenues aside for use when such a peace is in place." The
Talisman Divestment Campaign is asking investors in Talisman to
sell their stock in Talisman until the company withdraws from
Sudan. "In fact, villagers, militia commanders, political figures
[from the south] all asked us: 'Did the Canadian oil company ask
our permission to take our oil, and sell it? Why is Canada, a rich
country, taking our oil without our permission, and without any
benefit to us?'" (Report from the Canadian Assessment Mission,
January 2000). All welcome. 237 Champlain St., apt 3, Hull (a few
blocks from the museum of civilisation) More info:

Hills/Bolton. What originally began in 1989 as a modest walkabout
featuring urban cuisine in a rural setting has become an event that
guests & participants eagerly anticipate year after year. Imagine
strolling through a sweet-smelling field sampling dozens of the
freshest, most succulent organic creations accompanied by organic
and local wines and beers -- and you will get a taste of Feast of
Fields. While our successful fundraising initiative is intended to be
a leisurely, sumptuous experience, the underlying theme of Feast
of Fields is the connection between those who grow our food and
those who eat it, and the interdependency of all living things. Also:
organic growers sell their delicious selections of organic products
and answer questions about their operations & philosophies; non-
profit groups provide additional information about organic
agriculture, the environment, fair trade and other related issues.
Each year Feast of Fields is held at a different scenic landscape,
ranging from organic farms and lush vineyards to wooded
conservation areas and heritage sites. Similar events in Vancouver,
Ottawa, Calgary (and soon in Halifax, Montreal & Winnipeg).
Funds raised help support organic agriculture and the promotion &
understanding of growing, cooking & eating organics. Seeking

* FISHY BUSINESS (magazine focus, July 2000). Something
fishy is going on in world trade. Seafood prices are cheaper, more
Westerners are eating fish to help their hearts, but the fish
themselves are looking ill. Not only are there fewer fish around -
thanks to rampant fishing by seafood multinationals - but fish are
under threat from poachers, poisons & farmed intruders...
jeopardizing one billion people who are dependent on fish for their
primary souce of protein. July's New Internationalist seeks saner,
more sustainable alternatives. Available at better bookstores
everywhere. http://www.newint.org Full text of articles available
