JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: GIS PROJECT COORDINATOR

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS - Ottawa Valley
Chapter) seeks a highly motivated individual to provide GIS project
leadership for its Algonquin to Adirondacks Conservation Initiative. 

The applicant must be a well organized and meticulous person who will
provide technical leadership to the GIS component of the Algonquin to
Adirondacks Conservation Initiative.  Working closely with the Executive
Director, the GIS project coordinator will: 
1. Assess data and mapping needs for a community-based mapping project
2. Provide recommendations on the acquisition of equipment, and set up a
GIS workstation
3. Acquire, assemble and digitize (where necessary) baseline data:
provide data quality assurance and proper metadata documentation for all
data acquisitions
4. Analyze and query spatial data by writing data manipulation scripts,
SQL queries in Access and using ArcView extensions
5. Develop and manage databases
6. Help develop data sharing partnerships with other organizations

Qualifications: 
A diploma or certificate in GIS or equivalent experience and formal
training in ArcView/Spatial Analyst, Avenue, and database management.
Knowledge of other mapping platforms and programming (SQL, C, Visual
Basic) are an asset. The successful applicant will work in a dynamic
team environment but will also be required to work independently and
with minimum supervision within tight timelines.  Strong communication
skills in either French or English are needed.  Bilingualism is a
definite asset, as is an understanding of concepts underlying
conservation biology, landscape ecology, landscape planning.

Salary ranges from $32,000 to $37,000 per year based on qualifications
and experience.  The position is a one year term starting October 16,
2000, with the possibility of renewal.

EMPLOI:  COORDONATRICE/COORDONATEUR DE CARTOGRAPHIE NUMÉRIQUE

La Société pour la protection des parcs et des sites naturels du Canada
(Section vallée de l'Outaouais) est ŕ la recherche d'une personne
motivée pour mener notre projet de cartographie numérique pour le
programme de conservation Algonquin-Adirondack.

Sous la direction du Directeur, ce poste est responsable pour les
fonctions suivantes:
1. faire l'analyse des besoins en cartographie et analyse numérique pour
le projet Algonquin-Adirondack
2. preparer des recommandations sur l'achat d'équipements et établir un
poste de travail de Systčme d'information géographique (SIG)
3. faire l'aquisition de données numériques, en assurant la qualité et
la documentation nécésaire
4. analyses en SIG, utilisant des logiciels tel que ArcView, Access, etc
5. établir et gérer des bases de données
6. aider ŕ developper des ententes entre des agences qui partagent des
données numériques

Qualitées recherchées:
Un diplôme ou des études postsecondaires dans le domaine des Systčmes
d'information géographique (SIG), et une formation, ou expérience
équivalente, en gestion de bases de données, et logiciels tels que
ArcView/Spatial Analyst, Avenue.  Un connaissances d'autres logiciels
cartographiques et de la programmation (AQL, C, Visual Basic) seraient
des atouts.
Une maîtrise du français ou de l'anglais est requise.  Le bilinguisme et
des connaissances en biologie ou en sciences environmentales sont des
atouts. Ceci est un travail d'équipe dans un environnement dynamique,
mais vous devez travailler de façon trčs indépendante tout en respectant
des échéances spécifiques.
