Carleton University's
School of Social Work is hoping to offer 52.585 - Social Work Practice
Seminar: Social Development in the International Context during the first
two weeks of May, 2001, at the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural
Dialogue on Development (CCIDD), located about 80 kilometres south of
Mexico City. CCIDD program staff, in consultation with the Carleton
instructor, will devise a program that will emphasize direct exposure of
Carleton students to the lives, perspectives, and ideas of people from
economically poorer communities in Mexico, as well as to activists engaged
in a variety of social, economic, and political struggles. Group
discussions, individual consultations with the Carleton instructor, videos
and popular education activities will be used to critically reflect on
first-hand encounters with communities and activists. Furthermore,
students will examine how local issues relate to global developments, and
more specifically will consider how American and Canadian interests and
policies affect people in Mexico.

This course, based on previous experience with CCIDD, promises to be an
extraordinary learning opportunity. It will be offered if enough students
are interested, and will be open to students in social work or other
progams, who hold graduate or fourth year standing as of May, 2001.

There will be presentations and discussions with students about the course
on Monday, October 16 at 5 p.m. and again at 6 p.m., and on Wednesday,
October 18 at 2:30 p.m., in 2203 Dunton Tower. We will describe the course
curriculum and pedagogy in greater detail, tell you more about CCIDD and
its facilities, and explain the financial costs involved and possibilities
for raising funds.

For more information please contact Bill Skidmore at 2215 Dunton Tower,
613-520-2600, ext. 2359, or bill_skidmore@carleton.ca.
