[OPIRG-EVENTS] Reminder: Brown-bag lunch to meet Kenyan mining activists October25
On Wednesday, October 25, at 12 noon, there will be a brown-bag lunch
at CCIC (One Nicholas Street) to meet Dr. Willy Mutunga and Haron
Ndubi, who are in Canada to raise awareness about a titanium mine in
southern Kenya, that is being planned by Tiomin Resources of Toronto.
They are the guests of MiningWatch Canada and Rights and Democracy
(ICHRDD).
I am writing you because I thought you might like the opportunity to
meet them, and to learn more about this awful project.
The Kenyan coast is a stunning tropical paradise, with 250 miles of
palm-fringed beaches and a coral reef. Tourism depends on its
pristine beauty. Many endangered species live there. There are many
threats to the Kenya coast ecology, but the most dramatic, is a plan
by Tiomin Resources to mine 64 km2 of sand dunes about 10 km back
from the coast. The mine will displace over 5000 people and
permanently alter the environment. They also plan to build a deep-sea
port at Shimoni. the mine has created enormous controversy in Kenya.
An Environmental Impact Study done by Tiomin was supported by CIDA,
and has been severely criticized by Kenyatta University and the World
Conservation Union (IUCN). At this point, the mine is being held up
by the strength of opposition to it.
The Coast Mining Rights Forum has been leading the Kenyan opposition
to the mine. Mr. Ndubi represents the forum and Dr. Mutunga is the
executive director of the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
Feel free to pass this information on to your colleagues and others
you feel would be interested.
